Day 169: The Bit About Being Polite to Llamas

Q: What are you currently reading, tell us about it?
A: I'll just tell you about what I have added to the pile since we last spoke. Somehow the pile got five books bigger rather than any smaller. I've added The Mill on the Floss, A Necessary End, A Game of Thrones, All That I Am, The Silver Linings Playbook, Play to Kill and The Girl on the Stairs. So by a simple equation that must mean I have finished only two books in the last month! And I was on holidays for a week of that. Very, very sub-standard. All That I Am is Anna Funder's foray into fiction after her stunning non-fiction work Stasiland. So far it is a glimpse from the future at a time when lives change for ever globally because of the doctrines and beliefs of one man. From the first line—When Hitler came to power I was in the bath—we get an exploration of the mix of the political and the domestic. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Q: What is your favourite book character and why?
A: Ottoline, Chris Riddell's intrepid problem-solving heroine. Of course. I like her for her personality. But I mostly like her for her fine choice of friends, her mastery of disguises and her odd shoe collection. Every time she buys a pair of shoes she puts one in her collection and then matches the other with another single shoe in her closet to wear out. I rather like her.

Q: What would the title of your memoir be?
A: Irregular Choices. Or, I Heart Grammar.

Q: You be the director! Cast your favourite book characters for the movie version that has not yet been made.
A: What about a version of Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World? It would probably be best with subtitles, even if it is made in the States or the UK or Oz, just because it is so strange. The Narrators from both sections could be played by Edward Norton. The Shadow by Ryan Gosling. The Scientist/Gatekeeper by Malkovic. The Chubby Girl (sorry, that is her name in the text) would be Ginnifer Goodwin and the Librarian in both worlds would be Jayma Mays. I'm still picking the players for the minor roles.

Q: What book or series do you remember reading at elementary/middle school age?
A: Everything from the Magic Faraway Tree to Nancy Drew to Dr Who. I was voracious.
