Day 188: Had to Happen—Snails with Herbed Butter

I'm (last) Sunday Socialling, but a quick word first on snails. You can Frenchify it all you like. And I have tried to do the sophisticated thing and eat them all drenched with garlic butter, but ultimately, they still look like snails, or hard black bits of snotty stuff. Even if you mix butter with shallots, herbs, crushed hazelnuts and roll it flat and leave on ice to stiffen, then cook spinach, mix it with some cream, lay in the bottom of a serving dish, layer with twelve snots, I mean snails, and cover with some of the butter mixture and bake, it will still will be little balls of ickiness hiding in some other nice flavours. I'm not going to even pretend to like them.

Q: What is the best trip you’ve ever been on?
A: My inaugural footloose trip would to rate up there. A four year working holiday in Europe, where we interspersed working in the UK with riding our bikes though Europe. It gave me the lust. May not be good in a world where settling down is the expected thing. My dad always thought it would taint me for life into a wander-child like a friend they had. Think it did. But mine's not such a bad life even if it is sprinkled by a desire to leave. Often. I never really did get to see the UK though and so my recent three-soon-to-be-four-part walking holiday from Lands End to John O'Groats is a close contender too. There is nothing so perfect to reassure you of the okay-ness of being essentially alone in this world than walking with everything you own for a collective sixteen hundred kilometres though the world, be it a small British part of it. I cannot recommend it highly enough although I am sure there would be many who would hate it!

Q: What is your best idea for a girls weekend trip?
A: Oh God. Confession time. I am so socially inept I can't imagine being able to go away with a group of girls for a whole weekend. Nothing to do with the lovely people I know, but I totally convince myself, when I am with people, that they think I am the most boring, most annoying version of my teenage self I can imagine. And what you imagine, I imagine, you become. I could maybe only think this up as a weekend away with my sister. Or my best buddy. Maybe something like spending a weekend at the Elvis Festival in Parkes, Victoria. Or theme park bombing with one and op-shopping in the countryside with the other. Something fun and food filled, road-tripping and silly.

Q: What is your best idea for a couples trip?
A: I don't want to be a cliche. Can I ask? Is the dog coming? If so, then it has to be renting a cottage in a four or five hour driving radius from home with places to walk, open fires, a kitchen to cook yummy food and a backlog of movies and shows to watch. No dog? Then luxury on a budget in the form of Asia. If it's imperative to have a short flight, Bali. If not Phuket or Vietnam where the most stunning hotels, food and drinks cost next to nothing, the air is warm and languid, the pool is close and the massages plentiful.

Q: What is the best vacation on the cheap?
A: Again Asia is the answer to that question. And even more so if you are happy to go middle of the road, or less, for your accommodation. It's sad that it is cheaper to go to Asia than to stay in Australia. And for an island nation that means that any holiday will involve a flight. If a flight cost isn't an option then a driving/camping holiday in Australia is an option where there is heaps of amazing stuff to see, and, with a little research, to do as well.

Q: What is the place you most want to visit?
A: The current travel lust is directed towards Japan. Cultural excess expected.

  1. Interesting answers, and a beach and massage in Thailand sounds pretty good. Actually, any vacation from work is good! For me it's not so much the traveling anymore, it's the freedom I crave.

That outfit has a lovely 1940s Hollywood kind of feel - love the swirly skirt and the cinch belt!
